Anandaram Dhekial Phookan College (A.D.P.
College) is the name of a temple of learning, the very
utterance of which brings ‘Ananda’
i.e. ‘Joy’ in mind. The college is named after the illustrious son of
Asom, Anandaram Dhekial Phookan.
The Asam Sahitya
Sabha Session held at Nagaon in 1959, through a
resolution, urged the people to establish a college in the
name of that hallowed personality to bring to light his
wishes of spreading knowledge. Thus the college was
established at first as Night College, and later on
transformed to Day College with Night Section as a shift.
During the tenure of late Abdul Hye as Principal, the
Science stream was opened in 1978 to meet the aspiration
of the students of the district.
Situated away from
the din and bustle of the town and on the bank of the
river Kollong, the college is an ideal one for academic
pursuit. Students from urban and rural areas have been
converging to this institution for decades since to pursue
higher studies.
It is our proud
privilege to mention that our college has been awarded ‘B’
grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council in
2004.
We organise an
annual lecture in memory of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan
which is delivered by a person of eminence in the field of
literature.
Goals and Objectives of the College
The Mission and
goals of the college are to disseminate education in
humanities and science to meet the needs and aspirations
of the people of Asom in general and of Nagaon district in
particular, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and
sex.
The college was
initially started in 1959 as a Night college in Arts
stream with the initial objective of offering scope to the
earner-learners who were unable to attend day time
institutions in spite of their strong desire to pursue
higher education.
Later on, to meet
the needs and aspirations of the growing population, the
college was converted to a Day college in Arts stream in
1964 with night section as a shift. The Science section
was introduced in 1978.
A new era arrives in the college
Ushering into a new
era of vocationalization of higher education under the
dynamic leadership of our Principal Dr. S. U. Ahmed, the
college has introduced two new vocational subjects (1)
Bio-Technology (2) Computer Application at the degree
level from this session to be offered any one of these as
an elective subject in the Pass Course. This has been done
with keeping in mind the reluctance on the part of
students to go for basic science because of dearth of
employment avenues. With the introduction of vocational
subjects we feel that students will have ample scope in
procuring a livelihood after the completion of the course.
Short-term vocational courses in following subjects were
introduced in college under U.G.C programme from the
session 2006-2007.
1. Electronics Instruments Maintenance 3
month certificate course – Entry level H.S.
2. Mushroom cultivation 3 month
certificate course.
The college has also plans to introduce
the following two vocational subjects as and when U.G.C.
gives nods.
1. Principle and Practice of
Insurance.
2. Functional English.
The UGC sanctioned
for the introduction of following schemes for academic
improvement of the weaker sections in our college.
1. Remedial coaching for
Minority students.
2. Remedial coaching for SC/ST
students.
3. Coaching for Entry into
services for SC/ST students.
4. Coaching for Entry into
services for Minority students.
The UGC has also
granted permission to set up the following study centres
in our college.
1. Women Study centre.
2. Gandhian Study centre.
We have also received some
grant from U.G.C to organize seminars in Human Rights and
Value-Added Education.
In an effort to bring up the
existing infrastructure into higher level of growth an
R.C.C. building has been built with the financial help of
UGC for the dept. of Botany. All the existing Science
Laboratories are equipped with new addition of
sophisticated instruments. Mention may be made of
instruments like research microscope and overhead
projector for the dept. of Botany and Zoology, Laminas
flow for the dept. of Botany which have been procured
recently.
We believe in imparting
education with state of art audio visual aids. With this
object in view a model class room is being set up which is
equipped with LCD Projector, T.V., D.V.D., Tape cum CD
player, Home Theatre, Marker Board.
The college has its own website
